Meet Joey: Our Certified Therapy Dog

Joey’s Role at Lime Tree Counseling

Joey is a six-year-old Goldendoodle and a valued part of the team at Lime Tree Counseling. Many clients appreciate his gentle presence and the way he helps the counseling room feel more relaxed and welcoming. Research shows that therapy dogs can lower anxiety, increase a sense of calm, and help people feel more at ease during difficult conversations. Joey brings all of that to the room naturally.

Clients often describe Joey as warm, attentive, and surprisingly intuitive. He tends to sit close when someone is feeling anxious, places a paw gently on a leg to offer comfort, and settles in quietly during sessions without being distracting. Whether someone is navigating trauma work, anxiety, emotional abuse recovery, or simply having a hard day, Joey helps the space feel safer and more grounded.

    Joey’s Training and Credentials

Joey is a trained and certified therapy dog through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. He also holds the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen credential, demonstrating his calm temperament, strong obedience skills, and ability to remain steady in a variety of situations.

His training ensures that he can:

    • remain calm during emotional moments

    • respond appropriately to clients’ comfort levels

    • maintain a gentle, approachable demeanor

    • bring warmth without overwhelming the space

Joey joins sessions only when clients want him to be present, and he is always respectful of personal space.

    How Joey Supports Clients

Joey helps clients feel more at ease during sessions, especially those who:

    • feel anxious or on edge

    • find it hard to settle into the counseling environment

    • are working through trauma or difficult emotions

    • appreciate having something warm and steady nearby

    • struggle to connect or trust at the start of therapy

His presence often reduces tension and helps people feel comfortable enough to share what is on their mind. For younger adults, overwhelmed parents, therapists seeking therapy, and anyone doing deep work like EMDR or emotional abuse recovery, Joey adds a layer of grounding that is hard to replicate in any other way.

    A Little More About Joey

Outside of work, Joey loves long walks, paddleboarding with Katie, and anything involving bacon or cheese. Rainy days are usually spent solving dog puzzles or napping in creative positions. He enjoys meeting new people and is happiest when he is included in whatever is happening around him.
